PURPOSE
As script consultants we wanted to think of a way to give writers an opportunity to get their screenplays read-- and hopefully a way for them to obtain representation.
We realized that although the first 20 pages of a screenplay don't tell all, they do tell a lot about whether a writer can write and if his/her screenplay is working. The first 20 pages should reveal characters, conflict, originality, and writing style. And that is how the idea for the 20/20 Contest was born.
For $20, we read the first 20 pages of screenplays and rate them based on a
"marketability checklist”20-parameter checklist for marketability. In this way, writers receive useful feedback and the great scripts will, after a rigorous vetting process, garner guild signatory agency representation.
How The Contest Works
Round 1:
Enter the first 20 pages of your screenplay(s) into the Contest. One of our professional screenplay analysts reads these 20 pages and judges your entry according to a “marketability checklist” 20-Point Marketability Musts Checklist.
Send us the first 20 pages of your screenplay. If those pages are deemed marketable using a 20 parameter checklist, you will be invited to submit your entire script to be judged.
If your script doesn't meet all the Musts, the script is returned with feedback.
Enhanced Feedback Entrants will receive their pages back with margin notes, along with lots of other helpful feedback tools. Basic Feedback Entrants will receive just the
“marketability checklist” 20-point checklist of marketability 'musts'.
All scripts receiving 20 'yeses' on the checklist are entered into Round 2.
We have added # 20 - 1/2 to our checklist. Does the writer have a concept so compelling that we want to read more despite execution flaws?
Round 2:
All Round 2 Entrants are asked to send in their completed screenplay -- no money. The script will then be read by the same analyst who read the original 20-pages. If the full script holds up to the “marketability checklist” 20-point Marketability Musts Checklist, it will become a finalist and proceed to Round 3.
PLEASE NOTE: If a round two script fails to deliver mid-way, we do stop reading it at the point where it is no longer working. However, when possible and not deluged with too many Round 2 entries, we will try to e-mail you about what, where and when we believe it veered off track.
Round 3:
All of the other judges will read your screenplay. If it is loved by all, that screenplay
is then declared a winner!
